Where to begin? What is the meaning behind a film journal in this day and age? Let us lay our cards on the table – starting a film journal, a film website, is a ridiculous notion. It’s a meaningless gesture in the grand scheme of film culture. And yet it remained an ideal, almost a dream, and so we determined to try. Do not mistake this for naiveté, however. Our eyes are wide open to the situation. There are only a few worthwhile spaces in the online film world and our wish is to create our own.
There is no shortage of film websites on the internet, but their focus is narrow and pedestrian; frankly, they are boring. Their agenda is set by the whims of distributors and corporations. They are bound by the market and its demands. We wish to fight against this. How does this look? In true cinephile fashion, we are committed to our own curiosity, our own rabbit holes, digging deeper and deeper, true to our fascination. In a sense, the priorities of film culture are out of sorts; we wish to refocus the energies of our film culture to focus on what truly matters. If one looks at the yearly roundups on film websites it becomes obvious – everyone is seeing the same movies, going to the same festivals. In short, there are no discoveries.
Lucky Star is the name of our journal and is our attempt to create this new space. It is named after the Frank Borzage picture, a masterpiece which abandons the rational in its pursuit of beauty and emotion. Contemporary film culture could use more of this passion, more of this abandon, when speaking about films.
We hope you enjoy reading and thank you for following us on this journey.
